How it started
I started reloading and varmint shooting back in 1992. At that point I think my longest prairie dog shot was barely over 400 yards. I had a flat shooting 22-250 that was accurate and just changed my holds based on where the miss was seen.
I did not understand ballistics or the many factors it took to get consistent hits at further ranges. I started precision shooting around 2011 with the desire of hitting a 1000 yard target. I picked up a Remington 700 in .308 Winchester. I never had a 700 and come-on everyone needs a 700, over 5 million sold, how could my gun collection be complete without one? I picked the weapon based upon what I was told I needed to hit 1000 yard targets. Snipers use a .308 with 168gr SMK, so that was my first try.
Since then I have learned SO much. In 2012 I started shooting F-Class matches because I was unable to find any local public ranges that have distances over 300 yards. Shooting F-Class gets you introduced to some shooters that are very skilled at getting rifles to shoot very small groups. It takes equipment, time, and knowledge to get .25 MOA groups.

I shot F-Class for two summers.
Practical Matches
The next type of shooting I tried was tactical / practical matches. That is the type of shooting I still enjoy today. I started shooting some local matches: Tac match at Gopher Rifle & Revolver Club, Princeton winter matches, and the Hilltop Hilton Prairie Dog shoot. I was placing near the top and then started winning a couple matches.
In the fall of 2015 I decided to shoot the 2016 PRS two-day series. This is a national series that has the top shooters across the US. My first PRS match was the Breakneck match in Nebraska. It rained, it sleeted, it snowed, and we saw a 42mph reading on the Kestrel. Welcome to the big leagues.
The elements did not get to me as much as some other shooters, pays to be from Minnesota. I placed very well. Tied for 22nd place with 8 other shooters, but my slow performance on the tie breaker stage dropped me to 30th place. There were over 150 shooters registered for that event and I was very surprised I placed so well. I placed in the top third at South Dakota Steel Classic (PRS) and Heatstroke Open (PRS). That year my teammate Marvin Hobbs and I took second place at the Dakota Duel. After my 3 PRS matches I was able to achieve a national ranking of 150th.
DFAT
I started DST Precision to help support my gunpowder habit. It does cost a little to shoot and keep practicing. That brings us to the heart of DST: I created the D.F.A.T. (Dry Fire Adapter Trainer) to make practice nearly free.
I have helped hundreds of shooters get into the sport. Many have never shot over 200 yards and now are competing and doing well. I enjoy helping other shooters and teaching them how to improve their skills at PRS type shooting. Please contact me if you would like one-on-one training or have a group that would enjoy learning more about mid and long range shooting.
